As temperatures plummet to single digits I mourn
when training was effortless on 50-degree sunny days
when the weather was beautiful,
in January when it was easy
to say yes to a 100-mile gravel ride in May.

Yes to the 100 mile ride... I'm not so sure about the gravel. But in January, I'd probably agree to anything!
TOB, ... TOB,... Almanzo is calling you to join your partner, TOB,... TOB...
Jim--I think I just need an excuse to get a 'cross bike!
May is so far away. I am being pressured to do some epic rides in July, and it is hard to stop and think about the reality. "no worries"
Dee, that's exactly my concern: it all sounds great right now. There was a day when 100 miles on the road was a non-issue and 100 gravel miles just meant a slight upwards blip in my training. However, I'm just not the dedicated rider/racer I used to be -- 100 road miles actually takes some training, and 100 miles on gravel...well, even moreso.
It's easy to say yes w/o considering the reality. There is something intriguing about the idea, though, and that may be incentive enough.
You said Yes in January.
In May you'll be glad
